10, 2 P. M. Once Morose, Ike Williams Is Carefree as Bout Nears By JOHN WEBSTER Continued From First Sports Page Palumbo, the night club caliph, purchased Ike's contract from Connie McCarthy, salty and explosive, from New York's roaring West Side. That delighted Ike immensely. GOLFING DISPUTE Blinky is no jewel of consistency.

In fact, he is extremely jumpy. But the fighter finds the new ment satisfactory. He's annoyed only when Pilot Palermo tells him "tall tales" about his golfing. "That man say he can beat me," snorts Ike, a familiar figure on the fairways at nearby Galloping Hills. "I don't think he ever had a golf club in his hands." Otherwise, everything is happening for the best for Ike, who didn't box today because Doug Ratford, a disappearing sparboy, took an unBut doughty Doug promised scheduled trip home to New Yorks.

That's no good. "It's kept me from doin' my best but it won't be that way no more." After Goss and one or two others had arranged for Ike's earliest pro bouts, the poorly-paid stripling took matters in his own hands and vent to New York to find himself a pilot. He intended to sign with McCarthy, who had been associated with the late Eddie Mead in the direction of Henry Armstrong, a triple ring champion. But by mistake, Ike signed with Joe Woodman, one of pugilism's patriarchs who wasn't overly successful with the boy. For a time Woodman and MeCarthy joined hands in managing the rising youth.

Then Connie maneuvered his way into complete control. In spite of the stormy times with Connie, who bumbled along with all the restraint and appetites he'd brought from stevedoring. Ike won the NBA laurels and made two successful defenses. Now Ike comes up to the crossroads test on a rational, well-ordered plan. He will box 10 days, provided his weight permits.
