12-15, then again in its entirety Feb. 18. By JOHN FLEMING Times Performing Arts Critic The summer of 1994 was a momentous one for Van Cliburn, the most celebrated American classical musician of his time. The pianist embarked on his biggest tour in more than a decade, performing with the Moscow Philharmonic. The tour drew sellout crowds but turned into something of a fiasco, with Cliburn dropping Rachmaninoff Third Piano Concerto from his program, canceling some concerts and getting mixed reviews.

In July, the pianist turned 60. And then the following month, his mother, Rildia Bee O'Bryan Cliburn the only remaining member of his immediate family and his first and principal music teacher died at 97. "It was like a piece of music," Cliburn said, recalling the events of last summer by phone from his home in Fort Worth, Texas. "It had architecture, to say the least. It was almost as if it had been preplanned.

I think about it all the time." Cliburn will give a recital tonight in Sarasota as part of a gala to mark the 25th anniversary of Van Wezel Hall. He played at the hall during its first season. Cliburn called his concert at New York's Metropolitan Opera House on the night before his mother died "the strangest evening that I'll ever have." At first, he had canceled the performance, but then while at his mother's bedside at a hospital in Fort Worth, he decided to go ahead with it. "Mother was in a coma, but suddenly I had this incredible feeling," he said. "She was very attuned to duty and obligation, and it was almost as if I'd dishonor her if I didn't go through with the concert.

We had so many wonderful evenings together at the Met, attending operas. And I said it would almost be like being with her, and I knew she was there in spirit. The feelings I had were just so strong all during the time I was playing. I'm glad I did it." Cliburn, having chartered a plane after the Met concert, was there when his mother died the next morning. Tonight, Cliburn's program will include Beethoven's Appassionato Sonata, Chopin's Sonata No.

2 in B-flat Minor and other works he has played many times. He is frequently criticized for the thinness of his repertoire. "When I was between 14 and 18, Mother made me go through all the literature, but then I gravitated toward what I wanted to play in public," Cliburn said. "I never wanted to play everything." Cliburn once said his favorite time for playing was between 1 1 p.m. and 2 a.m.

at the Fort Worth estate he shared with his mother. "Now there are certain pieces of music that when I'm alone at home I love to play," he said. "I have no desire to play them in public. It's just for me. A slow movement from a Schubert sonata is something I can go over and over, to savor it.

It's a different thing when you're alone at the keyboard than when you're performing. When you're performing, 50 percent of you is on the stage and 50 percent of you must be out in the hall, gauging how you sound." Cliburn said his mother's influence lives on in his approach to practicing, which he likened to "cleaning and polishing and doing the laundry." He starts his practice routine with scales, just as she taught. "Mother always said to play scales slowly," he said. "When I'm having a low-energy day, which is 'most every day, she said play scales slowly and try to tune your mind to the eye of a sound. She knew her little boy didn't like to practice." regular commentary for NBC Nightly News, the network said Tuesday.

"I am delighted to be reunited with Andy," said Moyers, who worked with NBC News president Andy Lack in 1977 as senior analyst for CBS' Evening News. In other news Carl Reiner will reprise the role of Alan Brady from the classic TV series The Dick Van Dyke Show when he guest-stars on the NBC comedy series Mad About You. The episode airs Feb. 16. Bob Newhart will host Saturday Night Live Feb.
